Say YES! But Not to Everything.
I am a firm believer in having a YES mentality.
👍🏻 YES, I'll help!
👍🏻 YES, I'll create!
👍🏻 YES, I'll figure out a way to make that happen!
👍🏻 YES, we can find a solution!
But every once in a while, I get myself into a tailspin of yesses (or yeses - fun fact, I just looked it up the plural of yes is BOTH!) and I get buried in all of the things I've said yes to.
And I'm going to do them all because I said YES. I'm not going to turn around and say NO now!! Right?
Here's what I've been learning lately:
I can say NO. You can say NO. We can all say NO.
Say YES when it makes sense for you (or when it's part of your job that you can't say no to).
When is it ok to say NO?
🚫 When it doesn't serve you at all.
🚫 When it may serve you, but not right now.
🚫 When it goes against your values or ethics.
🚫 When you just freaking don't want to and no one is making you and it's not part of your job and it's something you're going to hate and for goodness sake can't you people just leave me alone?
One of the hardest things about saying no is just actually saying it. Without apologizing.
Here's an easy way: Thanks for asking. I'm not going to be able to do that.
